A Mapal project for Horwich WWTW – Pilot Trial for United Utilities

Pilot trial of Mapal’s floating Fine Bubble aeration system in Horwich WwTW

The reactor in which the project took place consisted of two lanes with four poorly functioning 22kW surface aerators.

Challenge

The existing reactor had surface aerators which gave poor results; poor mixing with dead mixing zones, low DO levels in the depth of the reactor, and the power consumption was high. Mapal’s challenge was to install a supplementary aeration system in a live reactor, that would overcome all these problems.

Solution

Mapal’s solution was to install eight floating Fine Bubble aeration units in order to achieve the client specifications: Improve the DO levels in the reactor, provide enough mixing, deliver AOTR of 84 kg O2/hr in order to withstand the effluent parameters, stabilize the MLSS, and reduce the energy consumption.

Results

Following the installation of Mapal’s floating Fine Bubble aeration system, the reactor reached all the client’s required specifications, with a 20% energy savings compared to the equivalent operation with surface aerators.
